Eighty-four percent of high school students surveyed by the College Board in 2025 said they had used generative AI for schoolwork. A RAND study found that between May and December 2025, the share of middle school, high school, and college students using AI for homework rose from 48% to 62% (RAND, 2026). The technology arrived in classrooms faster than schools could set rules for it, and the gap between student behavior and institutional policy is now the defining tension in American education.

The numbers tell two stories at once. Students are embracing AI at scale — 63% of teens who use AI say they get an answer to their schoolwork from it, and 25% use AI-generated answers as-is without modification (Common Sense Media, 2026). But 67% of students also say that using AI for schoolwork harms critical thinking, up more than 10 percentage points from earlier in 2025. Students know the shortcut exists, and they know the shortcut comes with a cost.

How are students actually using AI for schoolwork?

The Common Sense Media survey of 1,017 teenagers, conducted in May 2026, found that the most common use is getting a direct answer: 63% of teens who use AI report getting answers to schoolwork through it. Among those, 35% get an answer and improve it based on what they know, 31% rewrite it to sound like them, and 25% use it as-is (Common Sense Media, 2026). The last group represents the most straightforward form of academic dishonesty, and it accounts for one in four AI-using students.

But the picture is not entirely negative. The same study found that 77% of AI-using teens use it for help without getting direct answers: 45% brainstorm how to start an assignment, 43% check if their own answer is correct, and 40% get feedback after writing their own answer first (Common Sense Media, 2026). These are augmentation behaviors — AI as a study partner rather than a ghostwriter — but the line between them is blurry, and most schools have not drawn it clearly.

Can schools actually detect AI-generated homework?

The short answer is that detection tools are failing. A 2025 study of 14 AI-detection tools found false-positive rates as high as 50% and false-negative rates as high as 100%, depending on the tool (DeJager/The Conversation, 2026). About 20% of AI-generated texts were misclassified as human-written, and that figure rose to 52% when AI-written text was manually edited and 71% when it was machine-paraphrased. The tools are unreliable enough that they risk wrong accusations.

The false-positive problem is especially acute for nonnative English speakers. The same study found that detectors falsely flagged nonnative English writing as AI-generated at an average rate of 61.3% (DeJager, 2026). In a 2025 national survey, 43% of sixth-through-twelfth-grade teachers reported using AI-detection tools regularly, while another 27% had tested them. But the guidance increasingly warns against using detection as sole evidence of cheating.

What are schools actually doing about it?

The policy landscape is fragmented. Only about one-third of students say their school has a schoolwide AI policy, and many, especially college students, say rules vary by teacher (RAND, 2026). K12 Academics reports that 86% of educational organizations use generative AI, but most lack a governance policy. The adoption-outpaces-policy gap is now the rule, not the exception. Schools are using the tools; they just have not decided how.

Common Sense Media found that 35% of teens do not understand their school's AI rules, and 23% say AI use is banned at their school. Nearly one in ten say their school has no rules at all (Common Sense Media, 2026). When an AI tool is blocked on a school network or device, 59% of students simply use a personal device to access it instead. The enforcement problem is not just about policy — it is about the fact that blocking access does not change behavior.

Is AI homework actually cheating?

Students draw a surprisingly consistent line. RAND found that 45% of students believe getting direct answers to homework constitutes cheating. But 80% say using AI to understand an assignment is not cheating, 72% say brainstorming ideas is not cheating, and 67% say looking up facts is not cheating (RAND, 2026). The line falls between using AI to learn and using AI to produce — and most students can articulate the difference, even when their schools have not.

The HEPI/Kortext 2026 UK survey found that 95% of university students now use AI in at least one way, and 94% use it for assessed work. But the proportion who directly paste AI-generated text into assignments was only 12%, up from 3% in 2024 (HEPI, 2026). The dominant pattern is not wholesale cheating but a gradient: students use AI to start, to check, to refine, and occasionally to replace. Where on that gradient a school draws the line determines whether the behavior counts as learning or academic dishonesty.

What happens to critical thinking when students outsource the thinking?

This is the deeper question that the data keeps raising. RAND found that 67% of students — including 60% of students who use AI themselves — believe that the more students use AI for schoolwork, the more it will harm critical thinking skills. That number was 54% in February 2025 and climbed steadily throughout the year (RAND, 2026). Students are not oblivious to the trade-off. They just have limited incentive to make the hard choice when the easy one is one prompt away.

A Wisconsin survey of 303 educators found that 47% said difficulty assessing student learning when AI is used is a concern, and 40% of the national sample selected increased student reliance on AI as an impact on behavior and engagement. The problem is not that students cannot think. It is that the thinking loop — struggle, revision, understanding — gets short-circuited when the answer comes before the effort does.

What should schools do differently?

The emerging consensus from researchers is to stop trying to catch AI use and start redesigning assessment. The Artificial Intelligence Assessment Scale framework recommends that educators define what level of AI use makes sense based on the learning outcomes being measured. A creative writing class might ban AI entirely. A computer science class might require it. The point is to make the rules explicit rather than reactive.
